This Swine Life: Pig Named Six Seven Spared by Miami-Dade Mayor.
While perhaps not at the same level as pardoning Thanksgiving turkeys, but the mayor of Miami-Dade experienced a Donald Trump moment this week by formally pardoning the life of a swine named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava executed the holiday gesture at the Cuban-style Latin Cafe 2000 in the center of Miami’s Little Havana neighborhood.
“This animal is guiltless. She is worthy of this pardon. Her criminal record is spotless,” Levine Cava said in a speech with obvious nods to the vast quantity of pardons issued from the start of the commencement of a current administration.
“Unless you count eating half a dozen apples per day,” she went on. “May this pig enjoy a long and happy life free from concern.”
This ceremony, which both honors and questions the region’s Hispanic tradition of feasting on pork during the holidays, was founded to emulate the annual turkey pardoning at the White House.
The swine, provided by a first responder, was given its name from the popular vernacular phrase of young people exclaiming “6-7” – inspired by a rap song lyric – often seemingly at random. The trend became so pervasive that a major dictionary recently declared “6-7” its top term for the year.
A Peaceful Retirement
This particular pig is now set to enjoy its days at a countryside refuge “distant from barbecues and spits”, according to the ceremony's official statement.
“The annual pig pardon has become a beloved tradition to open the festive period,” said Eric Castellanos, in a notably cheerful message.
“It embodies the character of Miami: vibrant, diverse, and rooted in traditions that unite the community. Each year, we are proud to celebrate tradition and kindness in a way only Miami can.”
Attendees enjoyed a meat-free selection of croquettes and strong coffee as they marked the swine's new lease on life.
