During an inauguration day in his new role, Zohran Mamdani vowed to “reinvent” the metropolis, declaring “a new era” and an ambitious start to his administration.

An Unprecedented Figure

The young figure, who was a virtually unknown state assemblyman, is the city's first mayor of South Asian descent. He additionally marked a milestone by being the inaugural to be sworn in using the Islamic holy text.

“A moment like this seldom arrives and rarer still is it that the public whose hands are upon the levers of change,” Mamdani remarked.

Defying advice to lower expectations, the mayor declared: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to redefine is that of modest goals. Beginning today we will govern boldly and broadly.”

Adhering to Democratic Socialist Ideals

Mamdani explicitly affirmed his socialist politics. “I was elected as a democratic socialist and I will govern as one. I will not compromise my ideals for fear of being called extreme,” he proclaimed to loud cheers.

The inauguration was a dual event, starting with a late-night oath-taking in a former subway station. He was officially inaugurated on the steps of city hall by political ally Bernie Sanders, who praised Mamdani's election as a victory over powerful interests.

A Costly Platform

Mamdani now begins one of the most challenging jobs in American politics, with a platform promising:

• Universal childcare
• No-cost bus transit
• A rent freeze for about 1 million households
• A pilot of municipally-operated grocery stores

The projected $10 billion expense of these programs may prove difficult to secure. Mamdani has vowed to raise taxes on the richest residents and big business. However, as a city under the authority of the state government, he will require the legislative support of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Facing Political Challenges

The new mayor will deal with skepticism from some members of the Jewish community alarmed by his past criticisms regarding Israel. Sensitivities were highlighted during the transition when a senior aide resigned over offensive past tweets.

Mamdani has moved to address these tensions by convincing Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to stay on, preventing the appearance of losing a Jewish police chief.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “communist” and threatened withholding government money. Despite this, a recent meeting between the two was described as unexpectedly cordial.

The Core Tests of Leadership

Traditionally, New York mayors are evaluated by their ability in providing basic services: sanitation, reducing the rodent problem, repairing roadways, and ensuring reliable subway operation.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams touted his administration's public safety record, citing historically low numbers of murders and shootings in 2025, with 301 homicides reported.

As his administration starts, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Queens apartment to the stately mayoral residence. The outgoing mayor offered a quirky warning about a supposed resident spirit in the home, which reportedly only haunts those who fail to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani ended his remarks with a simple statement: “The work has only just begun.”
