The Mighty Nein's Opening Sequence Chose the Incorrect Popular RPG Show Song
The Mighty Nein, the most recent animated adventure from Critical Role, revealed a new introductory sequence. It features our favorite cast of misfits, outcasts, and criminals kicking ass and taking names, while teasing at several heart-wrenching backstories for characters including the voice actor's mage Caleb, and Travis Willingham's orc warlock, Fjord.
Overall, the intro appears amazing. But I couldn't help feeling that an element was missing in the music selection.
The intro uses "Welcome to the Continent", an exceptional song created by producer and singer the talented musician. This piece originating from the official score of the same name, the second release put out by Critical Role Productions LLC's music division Scanlan Shorthalt Music. It's a great sentimental choice, and I suspect that fans of the sequel series will appreciate its presence.
Personally, The series' opening fails to capture the excitement and excitement that was part of the second campaign's live-play sessions. "It's Your Turn", composed by singer-songwriter the artist, became an immediate hit in my view when it was first revealed in 2015, and it only got better when co-founder the performer wrote words to the tune for the animated Campaign 2 opening in the later year.
Including singing from Ashley Johnson, another performer, a co-star, as well as the writer, the track was memorable and fun. At the time, I hadn't even watched the follow-up series yet, but this was such an earworm that I kept it on my phone. This track that knows how to get you pumped before you dive into an installment of fantasy hijinks.
The Mighty Nein's opening with "Welcome to Wildemount" fails to hit the same chords in my opinion. It's a grand piece of music, but based on my understanding of the group, I can't help but feel that its tone is somewhat mismatched.
Of course, Critical Role has already said that the animated show will have some changes and differences from the actual-play campaign. An adjusted mood for its opening seems to be among these.
The Mighty Nein will be available to watch on the streaming service from Nov. 19. For those eager before that, or want a head start to get to know the personas of Critical Role's Campaign 2, the original episodes are accessible on the audio platform and the video site.
