The Diamond Family Alternative Video Game of the Year List for The Past Year
So, how did you experience 2025 in your household? Did it seem all as good as one might claim on social media? Overflowing with A-grades for your offspring and elaborate costume birthday parties for the parents? Or perhaps it was a ocean of letdowns with only rare entertaining flotsam? And was any of it authentic, or is everyone now seven-fingered synthetic personas with celebrity smiles?
I've corralled everyone together, willing or unwilling, to debate the most important thing in a calendar year: what titles we played the most. Without further ado:
Release Oldest Daughter Played the Most
Pikmin
"Is it impossible to pick just one?"
"You can't expect my definitive list."
Meanwhile, on mobile, her go-to has been Cityscapes and "searching for adequate healthcare."
"In the game?"
"In real life."
Release Second Son Played the Most
Overwatch
"I refuse to play games on my phone." He seemed insulted that I even asked. Point taken.
Release Third Daughter Played the Most
Resident Evil Biohazard
She is trying to get into drama school, but when she wasn’t singing, she was immersed in Resident Evil. She also spoke at length in great detail about her accomplishments on The Sims, where her character has a blooming utopia with far better healthcare than her eldest sister has outside the game.
Release the Spouse Played the Most
Crash Bandicoot: It’s About Time
She began the year at sixty percent completion and ended it at 82%. It’s a marathon not a sprint for her. Her mobile diversion: something called Woodle, where you have to extract pins.
Title I Teased My Kids About My Kids for Still Playing
Minecraft
Every time I see my adult son playing Minecraft, I set about him like a cross between a persistent critic. When he protests, I reply that I am doing this to prepare him so he can mature and play games for adults. This defines our Scottish father/son relationship.
Most Skilled Gaming Family Member 2025
Eldest Daughter on Just Dance 2024
It wasn't even close for this one. She is incredible. More impressive than I was at classic rhythm games in my prime.
Title I Played the Most
Marvel Snap
Nothing came close to the hours I spent on this insanely well-crafted deck building wizard’s poker, with its constantly evolving range of cards and game variations.
Game I Wish I Had Played Less
Marvel Snap
The worst thing about games that frequently update their range is you have a moment of clarity and see it is all just an attempt to trap you with compulsion-based microtransactions. So enjoyment soured halfway through the year and it went into the bin.
Game I Wish I Had Played More
Doom: The Dark Ages
Stunning reinvention of a classic franchise. Immersive atmosphere from the off. I wish I could eviscerate my issues so effectively in real life.
Title I Wish I Had Played More (Puzzle-Focused Edition)
Blue Prince
I'm unwilling to rush this stunning, original game and I just didn’t have the focused attention to give it what it required earlier this year. With relatives staying over the festive period, I plan to dive into this in the wee small hours after family time.
Game That Was a Lifesaver When I Needed It
Balatro
I know Balatro was the previous year's surprise hit, but I was a late adopter. And it is remarkable. It just gets absolutely everything right. The core concept is a wonderful concept, but the abilities behind the different joker cards are so creative it has become a game I literally would play constantly. Combine that with the charm of the card design, and this is an absolute pinnacle of gaming. I dream of being stuck in a small space for hours just so I have the perfect excuse but play it.
Game I Got the Most Criticism For Criticising
Outer Worlds 2
I experienced a bit of backlash when I critiqued how a specific bug in another game damaged the experience for me, but that other title is still a gargantuan gaming achievement in terms of production values – which I valued even more after playing Outer Worlds 2. So thank you to the commenter who took the time to send a message to say that my Outer Worlds 2 review was "missing the point". I mention that as written, because I respect the passion, and he is obviously an sharp judge of character.
Game Everybody Loved That I Just Didn’t Get
Hollow Knight: Silksong
Fine. Give me a brutally difficult Metroidvania-esque thing and don’t tell me guidance on what I am supposed to be doing, except "figure it out". Great fun. I get that it is beautiful and is perfection if you are into the genre, but I cannot think of a gaming experience I desire less in my current stage of life. I was around back when all games were like this, and I’ve had enough. It was acceptable when I was a kid, but so was many less comfortable things.
Biggest Gaming Scandal of 2025
Debate between corporate partnerships that caused concern, and premium pricing. Both morally indefensible and concerning.
Games I Would Name My Children After, Were I I Was Ever Foolish Enough to Have More
Clair Obscur, Despelote and Bananza would all make interesting names bellowed from the back door at bedtime.
Part of My Body That Aches Most From Gaming
Right Thumb Joint. No joke. I don’t know if it’s because of video games or endless scrolling, but it is sore like anything in the mornings now. I knew I should have got my thumbs looked after back in the 90s.
Game I Am Looking Forward to the Most in 2026
Grand Theft Auto VI.
And it will come out in 2026, even if we have to stretch time until the heat death of the universe.
Game I Am Looking Forward to the Most in 2036
The Witcher 4.
