New York Jets Coach Glenn Confident Kris Boyd Will Recover Fully After NYC Incident
New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn mentioned that he has been in contact with defensive back Kris Boyd and is confident the player will recover well after suffering a gunshot wound in central New York early Sunday morning.
Glenn noted that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “upbeat” during their recent conversation.
“That’s what eases my mind, is that he’s in good spirits,” Glenn said Wednesday. “His family, they are holding up and he will come through this without issue.”
It remained unclear when Boyd might be released the medical facility, where he has been listed as serious yet stable.
“Not certain at the moment,” the coach said. “However, I can share, from our conversation, his attitude was encouraging. Once more, that reassures me, because of his outlook and he expresses himself so positively.”
NYPD shared security footage earlier this week of an individual wanted in the shooting of Boyd. What prompted the attack remains under investigation and authorities said it is unknown if Boyd was singled out. There were no additional victims according to reports.
The incident occurred around 2 a.m. on Sunday morning near MSG and the bustling tourist spot. Boyd, twenty-nine, was admitted to Bellevue Hospital after sustaining an abdominal gunshot wound, as reported. The perpetrator got away.
Glenn shared Boyd has been on his mind “a great deal” since he heard about the shooting. Glenn added that Boyd and his spouse recently welcomed a newborn.
“The first thing I thought about, he has a new baby,” Glenn remarked. “I thought of his spouse, considering his child and my priority is his well-being. And that’s the only thing that really went through my mind.
“There’s a process to this, that I won’t detail, but I am pleased that he will recover excellently.”
Boyd did not participate this season, his debut year with New York, after being placed on injured reserve on mid-August with a shoulder issue that involved surgical repair.
He signed with New York as an unrestricted free agent in spring and was projected as an important component of a revamped special teams unit under Glenn and special teams coordinator the special teams coach. But Boyd was injured during preseason drills on 2 August and was carted from the field.
Boyd has remained around the team all season long while working his way back.
“He’s been a part of what we’re doing,” Glenn stated. “In fact, he comes to the games all the time. He’s fully engaged. Given his status as a special teams standout, he’s done a really good job of helping the other guys we have.”
Boyd, from Texas, began his career with Minnesota after being a seventh-round pick by the Vikings out of Texas University in 2019. He signed with Arizona in 2023 and moved to Houston’s squad subsequently. Boyd agreed to a one-year deal valued at $1.6 million with the Jets in March.
