Manchester United Set to Sign Germany Striker Lea Schüller from Bayern Munich
The Women's Super League club are finalising sealing the deal for prolific Germany forward Lea Schüller on a permanent transfer away from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.
A Marquee Signing for the WSL Side
The forward, with six months left on her deal, is known as a consistent goalscorer for both club and country. Having netted over 100 goals for Bayern and scored 54 times in 82 caps for Germany. Her arrival is viewed as a major coup for the Women’s Super League side.
Her exit from Munich was expected since she appeared to be fighting back tears while applauding the club's supporters following a victory over Bayer Leverkusen recently.
It was reported in late December that the Frauen-Bundesliga was losing one of its top strikers. Per reports, the formalities for the move have now been completed.
Consistent Goalscoring to Strengthen United's Forward Line
The experienced striker's signing is expected to provide a major uplift to the team's forward line. She has been highly reliable in front of goal in Germany’s top flight.
- For seven straight seasons, including the last term, she reached at least a double-digit tally of league goals.
- She won the Golden Boot in the 2021-22 season with a haul of 16 goals.
Gathering Momentum at Carrington
Securing Schüller’s signature comes at a time when the club appear to be gathering momentum.
Recent performances feature qualifying for the Champions League knockout phase playoffs as a seeded team and a victory in the League Cup quarter-finals.
Off the pitch, the mid-season window has brought additional business:
- The signing of Swedish defender Hanna Lundkvist on a three-and-a-half-year deal.
- The new deal for Japanese midfielder Hinata Miyazawa, who has become fan favourite since arriving in 2023.
Regarding Miyazawa’s extension, a club official commented: “Miyazawa is now a critical part to the way we play. Her understanding of the game and skill enables her and the team to control and dictate play from the middle of the park.”
The new defender, having arrived from a club in the NWSL, said: “You can sense how much the club have progressed in the last few years, competing in one of the strongest leagues in the world and now featuring in the top European competition.”
