Cancellieri Shows Glimpses of Exceptional Talent in Silver Lining for Struggling Lazio

The feeling at Lazio's home ground was decidedly gloomy this past Saturday. The Biancocelesti found themselves behind against Torino, an opponent that had allowed ten goals while scoring only two in their last five league matches. Ultras from the Curva Nord were finishing their most recent demonstration in an ongoing feud with chairman Claudio Lotito.

A Season Coming Unstitched?

Was the team's progress coming unstitched, or was there ever any cohesion maintaining its structure from the beginning? Lazio reinstated Maurizio Sarri as manager in the summer transfer window, but then he to later acknowledge that the board had not mentioned the transfer ban they were facing for fiscal problems. Rumours that he could resign were without basis, but he stated that Lotito had "misled" him.

Lazio became as messy on the pitch as they were off it, beating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but being defeated in their other first five games, including the Rome derby. At any given moment, observers have struggled to tell if they're getting better or self-destructing.

The Youngster's Unforeseen Presence

A single player kept smiling throughout. Matteo Cancellieri had not been expected to remain with Lazio this year. He completed last season with Parma on loan and, early this summer, his parent club were attempting to stay there a while longer. The registration embargo necessitated a reconsideration. They were unable to reduce their roster with no new signings.

He signed initially under Sarri's first spell, back then just 20 years old product of Verona's academy. He accumulated 20 Serie A appearances for Lazio in the 2022-23 season, the vast majority of those from the bench. The club's longtime sporting director, Igli Tare, who departed following that term, subsequently claimed Sarri of "telling everyone Cancellieri had superstar potential only to bench him consistently."

Finding His Best Role

Maybe Sarri was still trying to determine the nature of Cancellieri's abilities. Labeled as a flank player when he joined, Cancellieri yet was deployed for much of that season as an ineffective backup to Ciro Immobile at No 9. Across 63 games during spells with Empoli and Parma in the past two years, his tally was seven goals. Shoehorn
